Why he is NOT gonna wind up in a Chinese prison? Jeez, damned if I know. If he's counting on MY confidence, he'd best stay home. After all, I'm the guy who seizes up at the sight of blue lights in my rear view, because I figure they can still bust me for driving under the influence 20+ years ago.

That probably wasn't very helpful, was it?

Karsten would like to know why you're so confident that he's not going to end up in a Chinese prison. He'd love for you to elaborate. :)

Maybe he's seen "Midnight Express" one time too many?

http://imdb.com/title/tt0077928/

That one's enough to give anybody second thoughts about foreign travel...

I don't know Craig, but that description is very similar to how my friends describe Shanghai. Karsten and I may go visit them next year. Maybe. If someone can convince Karsten that the prisons there aren't too bad, and that he probably won't end up in a Chinese prison anyway. He's got some weird hangups about travel. ;)

That's two mentions of Shanghai in less than 24 hours. You know Craig Havighurst? Former Tennessean music reporter, WPLN contributor. He e-mailed me from Shanghai yesterday:

" got to go out and hang with fabulous media and art people on my second night in town. It was a little hard with the jet lag, the heat (it's wicked humid) and the wine not to flake earlier than I'd have liked, but it was fascinating - a mix of Chinese and expats. This city is HUGE and very cybermodern."

I think Craig followed his wife, Taylor Holliday, over there; she writes for the travel section of the NYTimes.
