Wow! That really looks fantastic & has come so far just since the last time I saw it. Can't wait to see it finished with the handrails and all.

Thanks for pointing it out, but yeah, we know, we know, and we're nervous about it, but it's the most historically accurate material to use. We went through this whole thing with our roofer to try to get ideas on how to secure it. He pointed out that the amount of copper someone would get from this downspout is trivial compared to the amount they get from stealing those air conditioner units. Which is a fine argument... if you're dealing with sensible thieves. Our neighborhood thieves are clearly willing to rob bird feeders, though, so we're dealing with a whole different level of stupid.

To that end, Karsten applied a chemical to the copper that speeds up the patina process so the copper isn't as bright, shiny, and enticing. It seems to be working - he only applied it the other day, and there's already a whole lot of green on that downspout. We also had the roofer secure it to the wall with several thick, strong bracelet-style anchors. And we paid attention to the shadows cast by the streetlight in front of the house, and luckily the downspout is almost completely in shadow, so if you don't know to look for it, you won't really notice it.

We're also having a fence installed within the next few weeks. It won't make it theft-proof, I know, but it should help.

Kate, that's gorgeous! :)

But I have to say that with the problems you've had with the plants and bird feeders I cringed a bit when read about the copper downspout.

It's not just Nashville, Cu thefts are up all over the country.
