Having bad luck with DVDs lately! I rented “Outfoxed” last night, and it wouldn’t play. (This is, unfortunately, not an unusual scenario with our DVD player, which is the DVD-ROM drive in Karsten’s 4-year old G4). Then I got up nice and early to watch “Bad Santa” on my own since Karsten isn’t interested in it (he stays up late to watch movies alone; I get up early), and it won’t play. I’m sure I’m not missing much on “Bad Santa,” but I’m still bummed about “Outfoxed.”
We need a new DVD player.

If you can get a used television set donated to you, it’s actually worth buying a regular DVD player now. They’re something like 50 bucks! Insane.

We got one of those $50 DVD players and have had minimal trouble with it (nothing that we couldn’t easily fix). Getting Outfoxed from Netflix today and hoping to watch it tonight.

Sam’s (insert evil Walmart imprecation here - God knows I do!) is selling combo DVD/VHS players for $49.95. If you like, I can investigate next time I go home, since I live more or less across the street from Sam’s. (Okay, actually I live across the street from the Sri Ganesha Temple, which pleases me greatly. But Sam’s is just up the road.)
I’d also be happy to research ‘em for you on Consumer Reports, to which I subscribe online. (We never made a single major purchase in my house growing up before researching it in the print version of CR. I think it’s in the genes.)

Yeah, I’ve been watching the prices drop. It’s just that, waah waah waah, we’d need to rearrange our whole living room setup to accomodate a TV and DVD player, and, well, eh. We actually tried buying a new external DVD-R drive for his G4, but it had just as many problems so we returned it. It’s probably the software or drivers or something that are just too old for today’s encoding, or whatever.
Maybe when we pay off the debt (in early December!) we’ll treat ourselves to a TV and DVD player. Maybe a combo unit.
It’ll take that long to figure out where we’d put it anyway.

Let me know how it is. I’m sure it’s great.

I’m thinking of checking into a combo TV/DVD/VCR unit. I saw one somewhere on the web for, like, $250 or something. Heard anything about those?
I do have a Sam’s Club membership card, actually, courtesy of my mom and her Chamber of Commerce. So maybe I’ll pop into the one down in Bellevue or wherever it is. Thanks for the tip!

I have a confession: I LOVED Bad Santa. We own it and it is freaking hysterical, as long as you enjoy black humor. Definitely NOT a feel-good movie!
