30th birthday mix CD
For fun, I’m putting together a 30th birthday mix CD. It includes some fun songs, some reflective songs — all stuff I think will be good just to listen to on Tuesday and ponder.
For example, I’ve got:
Happy Birthday To Me - Cracker
My Next Thirty Years - Tim McGraw
Why Georgia - John Mayer (a song that kind of annoys me because the verse melody is identical to Carly Simon’s “Coming Around Again”)
and a bunch of others I can’t remember. (Is memory the first thing to go? I can’t remember.)
Any suggestions for additional songs that would make sense in such a compilation?

I did a mix CD for my 30th this summer. My parents had a party for me, and I ended up giving them out as favours. I’ll look when I get home tonight and see what I put on the play list.
And, Happy Birthday!

Why Georgia bothers me for the same reason!

Heh. When I saw the reply email in my Inbox with your name on it, I just knew you were going to be agreeing with me on that.
Melodic minds think alike, I guess.

Reflective: CSN’s “4+20″ (it’s on Deja Vu)
Dancing around in your socks: The Beatles “Today It’s Your Birthday” (I think that’s right) or Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime”.

If you’re up for adding a bit of humor, I recommend Amy Rigby (who I believe is from Nashville). There’s a couple of songs on her album Middlescence that might be fun: “The Summer of My Wasted Youth” and “Invisible,” though she does mention turning 35 in the latter, so it’s a bit off.

As Promised:
Fireflies–Lori McKenna
Believe–K’s Choice
As I Am–Erin McKeown
Moses–Patty Griffin
More to this woman–Eleanor McEvoy
Garden Rose–Kris Delmhorst
Everything I Need–Melissa Ferrick
Pray–Nini Camps
Closer to Me–Dar Williams
There were a few more, I think finally and I can’t find the play list. My songs were more about growing up, becoming your own than about birthdays specifically. Turning 30 wasn’t too bad, but I feel like I’m too young to be 30 already and at the same time, feel way to grown up for my age.

That’s kind of where I wanted to go with it, too, at least in part. But it’s also a reflection (sometimes tongue-in-cheek) about the last year, and the last few years in general, as well as the whole of my life ’til now — not to mention what I can see ahead in the years to come. Here’s the list so far:
Happy Birthday To Me - Cracker’s suggestion!)
My Next Thirty Years - Tim McGraw
Why Georgia - John Mayer
Watershed - Indigo Girls
Soul Child - Shawn Mullins
Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads (Thanks to
Happily Ever After (Every Now And Then) - Jimmy Buffett (I thought about “A Pirate Looks At Forty” but it seemed too specific to Jimmy’s own life to have enough relevance to mine)
The Middle - Jimmy Eat World
Closer To Fine - Indigo Girls
Learning to Live With Me - Harley Allen (I also have the Gary Allan recording of this one but this is a wonderful Live At The Bluebird recording of Harley singing his own song, and it seems way more powerful that way)
That’s Just About Right - Blackhawk
One Small Year - Shawn Colvin
Still Crazy After All These Years - Paul Simon
No Time To Kill - Clint Black
And She Was - Talking Heads
Turning 30 wasn’t too bad, but I feel like I’m too young to be 30 already and at the same time, feel way to grown up for my age.
Same here. I thought about including Garth Brooks’ “Much Too Young To Feel This Damn Old” but lyrically it gets too specific with rodeo/truck-driving/life on the road in general or however you want to interpret it. If I were going by the title alone, it would definitely belong in the collection.

Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime”
Oooh. Good one.

The Beatles song is simply called “Birthday”. It’s on the White Album. My dad used to blast it on the morning of my birthday.

It’s too late, but I thought of a couple more.
CSN’s “Wasted on the Way” and Peter Gabriel’s “Shaking the Tree”.
