30th birthday mix CD

Monday, December 15th, 2003

For fun, I’m putting together a 30th birthday mix CD. It includes some fun songs, some reflective songs — all stuff I think will be good just to listen to on Tuesday and ponder.

For example, I’ve got:

Happy Birthday To Me - Cracker
My Next Thirty Years - Tim McGraw
Why Georgia - John Mayer (a song that kind of annoys me because the verse melody is identical to Carly Simon’s “Coming Around Again”)

and a bunch of others I can’t remember. (Is memory the first thing to go? I can’t remember.)

Any suggestions for additional songs that would make sense in such a compilation?

Borrowed from firecat. Now you’ll all have a hint of how many years of my life have been spent watching movies. :-)

I have just shy of nine days left to be a twenty-something. What should I do with myself?

Coming out to my cat

Saturday, December 13th, 2003

I just woke up from a dream in which I was coming out to my cat, Blackberry.

Halfway through telling Blackberry I’m bi (”so that means I sleep with both men and women” — I dream of not-very-good definitions of bisexuality) he turned into my coworker who’s Indian (as in, from India).

I think this dream is trying to tell me something. I think Blackberry may be Indian, too. Or at least, he has an Indian accent. We’ve always said Blackberry has a “funny”-sounding meow. Now I feel horribly monocultural. Maybe he was just meowing with an accent.

Smoke breaks at work

Thursday, December 4th, 2003

How do people who take frequent smoke breaks ever get anything done?

The window behind me is near a door where people congregate to smoke. I see the same people coming back many times throughout the day, lingering for what seems sometimes like 20 or even 30 minutes. I swear, some of these folks seem to be out there 8 or more times a day.

Meanwhile, I get up occasionally to get more water or a cup of coffee and I’m back at my desk within two minutes, tops. OK, unless I have to brew a fresh pot of coffee and then I wait just long enough to swap my mug for the carafe under the drip while it’s brewing, just to save time. (And of course, there’s the five minutes I’m spending writing this message.)

I’m not saying people shouldn’t take breaks, and I’m not saying I’m not a little more rushed lately than I wish I had to be, but 8 breaks of 20 minutes each? Dude, that’s pretty luxurious. And I still want to know how they manage to get anything done.
