Sudden change in weight

I weigh myself at the same time every weekday as weight factors into lots of measurements: fitness, BMI, even hydration, and so on. I don’t like to see the number change very much from day to day, and it usually doesn’t. Even during fitful times in my menstrual cycle, a difference of two pounds from one day to the next would be a lot.

This morning I weighed exactly five pounds less than I did yesterday. Five pounds!

I’m not freaking out yet, but I’m definitely going to watch the next few days carefully. I’m more than a little puzzled about how I could have dropped so much water weight so fast — and if it’s not water weight, I’m definitely concerned.

That is a big drop, but unless you’ve been eating badly, it’s probably not anything to worry about. Do you have an idea of where that might have come from?

No idea, really. And now I’m having the evil flu shot reaction, so I’m just going to take it really easy this weekend and not worry until I check the scale Monday morning.

Maybe you should think about weighing yourself once per week versus daily.

*wait for scream of horror to die down*

If that particular option doesn’t appeal (though it has improved things for a lot of the obsessers I know), I will say that I’ve had similar fluctuations several times, and they seem to end up evening out ultimately. As long as you know you’ve been doing things relatively similarly, maybe just give it some time and see if it returns to normal.

Of course, if you suddenly drom another 10 lbs, get thee to the dr!! :-)

I don’t feel I’m being obsessive about it. I’m training to run my first marathon next spring, so I’m keeping track of a number of measures relating to my running performance as well as to my overall fitness and health.

It’s just that this five pound drop is unprecedented. Since April I’ve been tracking my weight from day to day and have not seen a drop even half this size in a 24-hour period.

So yeah, if I’ve dropped a lot more weight over the next few days, I’ll be concerned enough to get to a doctor.
